Missions

Building pieces of another world.

This page contains summaries of my current in-progress, or on-hold, missions for Thief. They are currently all for Thief 2, and I'm unlikely to switch to Dark Mod missions for the foreseeable future.

The missions started off as entirely separate entities, with little concrete plot attached to them initially. While working on Xavier's Library, I realised that I could construct an overarching storyline to connect them all, effectively forming one campaign, albeit somewhat less tightly connected than most normal campaigns. While they will each be able to stand alone, my hope is that, once finished, they will tell a single story... I just hope people are still playing fan missions by the time I finish them all!

Xavier's Library

This mission began life as my entry into uncadonego's No Pressure (Un)Contest from 2009. I've missed the 'Christmas 2009' deadline by just a little - first I made the mistake of exceeding the suggested size, then I decided to go for complicated details, and then Life Happened. What should have been a couple of months is now a couple of years...

The mission is a 'mansion-like' affair, providing multiple entry and exit points and a few twists. Architecturally, the main building in the mission is based around a real structure in my home town (which actually contains a real library!), and a number of textures used in building the mission come from photographs I have taken of the building. Externally the structures are very similar, internally they are completely different (partly as a concession to the Dark engine's limitations, partly out of gameplay necessity).

I should also note that the easily scared may want to avoid this mission. The mission does not involve undead enemies, but it does involve some features designed to be scary.

Shadowed Mayfield

Shadowed Mayfield began as a building experiment - I wanted to see whether I could replicate the architecture of the now-derelict Mayfield Station in Manchester, England. The mission grew up around the building, now declared to be a warehouse in South Quarter near the docks, and was originally going to be a fairly simple city mission. Over time, increasing levels of Plot have happened, and the already somewhat sinister introductory text only scratches the surface of the real problem...

The mission has also been split into two pieces - the Dark engine has limits, and the only way to include everything needed is to split the mission. Now one part takes place in the South Quarter around the Mayfield warehouse, and another takes Garrett a long way beneath it, to another piece of the buried Lost City...

Mages of Drom's Head

Mages of Drom's Head was my first major attempt at mission building, after a series of small experiments and false starts. It started as an attempt to build a large, circular library and an attached mansion built into a hillside, with only partially successful results: the library was build, and the mansion started, but I soon lost direction and inspiration. Worse, very poor building techniques meant that several areas were difficult to work with, far less efficient than they could be, and lacking in detail.

Mages of Drom's Head was shelved in favour of Shadowed Mayfield, and my intention is to rebuild it from scratch using the experience I have gained over the years. It forms an integral part of the larger story I want my missions to tell, so it will be released eventually!
